Testbed Description

In recente years, the network bandwidth (especially in Scientific/Academic Networks) has increased unbounded, on the other hand, the end system itself has became a bottleneck, since the I/O and memory bandwidth inside the core grows slower than the network one.

In this section, we describe the testbed used for machine noise characterization. Fortunatelly, we have total access to some powerful machines in the context of NRL/UCLA (Network Research Lab) - http://www.cs.ucla.edu/NRL.

Following is the technical specification of these machines.

  • Machine 1
    Dual 3.06 Ghz Xeon
    2 CPUs Cache 512KB L2 / 1GB L3
    1 GB RAM
    PCI-X Architecture
    Adaptec AIC79XX SCSI Disk (133MHz)
    FreeBSD 5.1
    Linux 2.6
    Intel Pro/1000 T Server Adapter

  • Machine 2
    Dual 3.06 Ghz Xeon
    1 CPU Cache 512KB L2 / 1GB L3
    1 GB RAM

    WDC WD1200JB ATA Disk
    Linux 2.4.20
    FreeBSD 5.2
    Intel Pro/1000 T Server Adapter
